Common questions
2-stroke fuel mix FAQs
How much 2-stroke oil do I need for 1 litre of petrol?
At 50:1, add 20 ml of oil to 1 litre of petrol. At 40:1, add 25 ml. At 25:1, add 40 ml. Always use the ratio specified in your machine handbook.
Can I use the same fuel mix in my chainsaw and strimmer?
Only if both manufacturers specify the same fuel, oil specification and mixing ratio. Check each machine separately.
Is 2-stroke oil the same as chainsaw chain oil?
No. 2-stroke engine oil is mixed with petrol where the engine requires it. Bar and chain oil goes into a chainsaw’s separate chain-oil reservoir.

Always prepare fuel in a clean, approved container, in a well-ventilated area and away from ignition sources.

Add the petrol
Pour the required amount of petrol into a clean, fuel-approved container first.

Measure the oil
Add the calculated amount of 2-stroke engine oil. Do not estimate the quantity.

Seal and mix
Secure the container, shake gently, label the mixture and avoid keeping old mixed fuel.
Suitable equipment
Which equipment uses a 2-stroke fuel mix?
Some chainsaws, strimmers, brushcutters, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, pole saws and lawnmowers require petrol mixed with 2-stroke engine oil. Only use this guide when the manufacturer specifies a premix, and check the required oil specification and mixing ratio.
Chainsaws
For chainsaws with 2-stroke engines that use premixed fuel.

Engine oil and chain oil perform different jobs
2-stroke engine oil
This is mixed with petrol at the specified ratio to lubricate the inside of a 2-stroke engine.
Bar and chain oil
This goes into the chainsaw’s separate oil reservoir to lubricate the guide bar and chain. Do not add it to the fuel.
